Chris Cantell Discusses - Our Games: "Boogie SuperStar"
by Livia Cseresova

Boogie SuperStar is the name of Electronic Art´s newest singing and dancing game for Nintendo Wii system. The game was created for young girls, who are many times ignored by game creators. John Buchanan, marketing director for EA's Casual Entertainment division said that they "knew this was an amazing audience to go after and to take what girls love—fashion, music, dancing—and create a video game for these girls to show their self-expression."The aim of the Boogie SuperStar game is to be the best at singing at dancing among the players and get the title of Boogie Superstar. Players are taken away to an island where they train their singing and dancing for the competition.People playing the game can select their character and adjust its name, look and outfit. After doing so they can pick a song from a playlist of Top 40 pop songs. Players of Boogie SuperStar can direct the movement of their characters and the microphone (as a part of the game) measures gamers´ vocal fluctuations.According to EA games Boogie SuperStar promotes "self-expression, creativity, and empowerment for girls worldwide," but according to Didi Cardoso, managing editor of Grrlgamer.com, a video game web site produced by women, “anything using pop-stars with 'issues' that revolve around scandals can create any kind of positive self-empowerment," Another game for females for the Wii, will be released together with “Boggie SuperStar” in October 2008 and its name is "Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek."Both analysts and critics in the gaming industry say that "Boogie SuperStar" and also "Nancy Drew" Wii games are a good step for video game creatorss and will help to increase their consumer base.
