Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: In the spotlight thanks to the zapping of aliens
by Martina Harvanova
Some of us try to avoid any contact to the public, in larger scale. Those can't stand when others are watching them or listening to their speech. There are also different ones who would metaphorically die for being in the spotlight and don't hesitate to go into extremes to achieve their goal. †For the second group of extroverts the Guinness World Records definitely seems to be the right choice in their effort to draw the attention to themselves. In the age of computers and technologies there is nothing easier than sitting in the front of PC screen and let the characters of a game take you to the land of playing. The award is an entry among the world-record holders. †This month's release of the Guinness World Records book will seduce many video games worshipers, because the special issue of one of the most popular printed matters is solely dedicated to computer games. Unfortunately, the time for your name to be a part of this year's edition has passed. However, you must have been extremely trained to surpass the by-now best game player, as the record of zapping aliens is set on the level of 38-hours and 30-minutes period. Although the majority of us think the day-to-day computing is just a feature of the 21st century, the record surprised the public 28 years ago. Surprisingly, the game industry still hasn't found a follower of Eric Furrer, a Canadian that gained the title of the world record holder during a marathon session in 1980.Only some of the so-far released games own the overwhelming ability to attract the attention for hours. The list of bestsellers in the game industry, claimed as the fastest growing entertainment sector in the world, consists mainly of Atari, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and Sega games. However funny it sounds, the winner among the most sold games is Super Mario Bros. that achieved to be delivered to 40.23 million people in the moment when it was originally bundled at launch. The first place among the console games, not originally bundled, belongs to PokÈmon Red, Blue and Green with 20.08 sales worldwide. We should mention also Tetris that boomed in 90s and The Sims whose episodes have addressed tens of millions people. World of Warcraft is currently the most cited game. †The variety and options are wide, it is up to you. If you want to be mentioned in the next issue of Guinness World Records, you should rather start practicing. So, I hope you will enjoy your dozens-of-hours time sitting in front of the screen!
